Burj Dubai & Window Cleaning Videos

A tall order to keep the tower clean: As the towering Burj Dubai glistens in the winter sunshine, spare a thought for the team of fearless men whose unenviable task it has been to clean the massive glass facade ahead of the tower’s grand opening tomorrow. Teetering on platforms suspended by ropes and pulleys, the men have spent the past three months scrubbing, polishing and wiping the windows of the world’s tallest building to remove every trace of dust and grime.
It has been no mean feat. Burj Dubai’s surface is made up of 28,261 cladding panels, enough glass to cover 14 football pitches. And at 818 metres tall, this is no task for anyone who suffers from vertigo.

James Bunn, an operations manager at Gecko, the company contracted to give Burj Dubai its first “build clean”, said the job had not been without challenges. The first task was to remove stubborn stains left by building materials and which had become ingrained on the window panes.
“The build clean is what you call a building’s first clean, so there are different sediments left on the windows, like plaster. When that is done, it is then a window clean, which is a lot easier,” Mr Bunn said.

Burj Dubai which will officially open on the anniversary of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President of the UAE, becoming Ruler of Dubai boasts 160 storeys. Yet no part of the tower has a straight 818-metre drop; the longest is 390 metres. This dizzying thought does not concern Mr Bunn, although he acknowledged that strong winds almost a kilometre above the ground can be a problem. “It is daunting when you are looking down 390 metres, but you get used to it. I have to look down to make sure the rest of the team are OK and doing their job,” he said. “The height doesn’t bother me: it is the same being 20 metres up or 800 metres. “One day we were setting up to clean one side and then a wind picked up, which was too strong. So we had to take everything back up and as a result wasted an entire morning setting up the gear.”

The workers regularly found themselves above the clouds. “It is like a big blanket of snow below when you’re up there,” Mr Bunn said. Working from the top to the bottom, it took the company three months to give Burj Dubai the sheen it enjoys today. Teams of 12 men would suspend themselves every day from one of the 11 platforms on each of the tower’s three sides. On the ground, more than 10 men would operate machinery while another team would supervise the ropes above them from the platforms. Mr Bunn would keep track of the team’s progress on a diagram of the building, colouring in parts of the tower that had been cleaned. The drawing now hangs in his office with all sides coloured in. “As you can see, the different shades of yellow showed the different times it was complete and you can see how we moved around the tower,” he said.

Soon, the building will be a hive of activity with office workers at their desks and guests of the luxury Armani Hotel milling around inside. Mr Bunn assured future occupants they do not have to worry about window cleaners peering in at them. “You can’t see in unless you try very hard. Also, I have tried to get the attention of guys inside by banging on the windows and they didn’t know I was there,” he said. Gecko is no stranger to working at altitude: it recently replaced an aviation light in The Address hotel in downtown Burj Dubai and is contracted to clean the exterior of the Rose Rayhaan by Rotana, which bills itself as the tallest hotel in Dubai.

Needless to say, working at such perilous heights makes safety paramount. Hairline fractures in any of the buckles or abrasions to the ropes can develop and easily worsen if weight is added. “We inspect everything. If there is any damage to any of the gear, we just throw it out,” Mr Bunn said. Now that the “build clean” is complete, Burj Dubai will not require such an intense scrubbing in the future. But someone will be responsible for maintaining the lustre the tower now enjoys. Slide show here. Click top picture for the video.

Window-washer who died after fall is memorialized at accident site outside of Grand Rapids Art Museum. In her little pink bonnet, 6-month-old Peyton Cotter seemed oblivious to the rain as she smiled at her grandparents and other relatives gathered this morning on the damp sidewalk outside the Grand Rapids Art Museum. She was also blissfully unaware of the bittersweet mix of emotions as museum staff dedicated a plaque memorializing her father, Tyler Cotter. The 21-year-old new father died after falling from scaffolding as he worked 40 feet off the ground cleaning the museum's windows.
Cotter's girlfriend and his daughter's mother, Samantha Goldner, said the family continues to struggle with their grief but the plaque among the landscaping along Monroe Avenue NW declaring the area the "Tyler Cotter Memorial Walkway" means his daughter will be able to see it years from now and remember the man who shed tears of joy when she was born. "I'm glad that when people walk by, they can clearly see it," Goldner said. "It means a lot."

SEATTLE - The 34-year-old window washer who survived an eight-story plunge on the job says what happened to him was a miracle. "I don't think it's luck. I know it's God (who) saved my life," said Eduardo Lozada, who spoke about last week's accident for the first time in an interview with KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Gary Horcher. Lozada said he's still not sure how it happened, but while he was washing windows at a downtown Seattle highrise Thursday morning, he suddenly started to fall. He said time seemed to slow down but that he was certain he was about to die on impact.
"I have to accept that it was my last moments, and when I let go of the ropes, I know I'm going to die. So in my mind and in my heart, I die for a minute, for seconds," he said. I say, 'OK, this is the end.' I say, 'God, forgive me, and take me.'" Lozada said he closed his eyes, and his entire life appeared like a single vision. "Everything, all your life just came through your mind, and you're able to see everything at once."
Somehow, the ropes clipped to Eduardo's harness broke his fall just before he hit the sidewalk. "I said, 'I'm alive. I feel pain. Oh my God, if I feel pain, it's because I'm alive! That's when I realized that God saved my life." Lozada suffered a badly sprained ankle and a swollen knee. The only bone he broke is in the tip of his pinky finger. He said he's never been a religious man, but his brush with death has awakened a new part of him and that every day is Thanksgiving. "For me, it's a new day every morning. I feel blessed every morning, from now on."
He said his gift is knowing that there is hope in every second. "Nobody's able to give you a new life except God, and he give me a new life. And I just hope that I do better in this one." Lozada said he can't talk about the investigation into the incident but he said that he's always felt safe on the job. He said if he were physically able, he wouldn't be afraid to go back to work. Construction workers rescued as mishap leaves one dangling: Two construction workers were rescued Tuesday after a window washer unit collapsed on the side of the 48-story Duke Energy Center under construction uptown. One of the men dangled 40 feet in the air from a lifeline while the other scrambled to the safety of a small roof. Both were equipped with safety harnesses and were unhurt, said Carlos Vergara, safety coordinator for the Batson-Cook Co., an Atlanta-based general contractor. The two were waterproofing and caulking windows on the side of the grayish-blue tower on the southern end of uptown between South Tryon and Church streets at Stonewall.
The incident is under investigation, and the company will file an incident report with the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, Vergara said. It appears one of the motors that winches the platform and its steel cables up and down might have malfunctioned, he said. Workers responded by shutting down one block of Stonewall Street and rescuing the dangling worker with a cherry picker. The other worker was standing on a roof about 20 feet off the ground.

A fed-up window cleaner has painted his terraced house pink with yellow spots to chase away the November gloom. Vince Holden, 47, is hoping his elaborate new paint job will put a smile on the faces of everyone in the small town of Penrith, Cumbria. He plans to give the larger spots smiley faces based on the text message smileys on mobile phones.
He said: 'I didnt want it to look like Mr Blobby, I just wanted to put a smile on people's faces. 'There are 14,700 people that live in Penrith. If they all have a smile on their face and give a pound to charity every time they see my house it would be fantastic. 'I got the idea from a house I saw with a chimney stack painted like a Liquorice Allsort.' Mr Holden says the new paint job is not designed specifically to raise money for charity, but he has now put a poster in his front window asking anyone who enjoys his artwork to give money to a charity of their choice.
'Everybody I know has given it a fairly good reception,' he added. Eden District Council leader Keith Phillips said: 'The property in question is not a listed building so the resident is not breaking any planning guidelines. 'I hear that the motivation behind it is to cheer up the people of Penrith in these gloomy economic times. I hope it has the desired effect.'

What if you were asked to be on TV tomorrow? What would you do? Let’s say that a reporter from your local television news station called you up tomorrow morning, around 10:30am, to tell you that they were doing a special segment for the 6 o’clock news on Professional Eavestrough Cleaning, and wondered if you might be available for an interview? And what if they also said that they were interested in filming you doing the work, and also wanted to run some common concerns by you to see what you had to say? Would it be worth it? The result is below. I recorded tonight’s 6 o’clock news report on my iphone, so it’s not perfect, but you get the idea. Incidentally, the reporter, his assistant, and the cameraman all asked for my card after the filming and interview were completed, and said they would call in the Spring. The moral of the story: Exploit, don’t squander valuable marketing opportunities. Repeat that to yourself so you don’t forget. You never know, a reporter might be phoning you up tomorrow morning.

Why is Friday the 13th unlucky? Friday the 13th has traditionally been when the superstitious take extra care and double check everything they do. Now experts at the Glasgow Science Centre are looking into the global phenomenon to determine if there is any science behind the superstitions. GSC said it is a mix of superstitions - Friday being the unluckiest day of the week and the number 13. Mr Laing said another widely held superstition is that walking under a ladder is unlucky.
It is said to stem from the Christian belief the triangle was the symbol of the Holy Trinity and therefore, by walking through the triangle - made by the ladder, wall and ground - you were being disrespectful to God. However, Mr Laing said there is a more practical explanation for it being unlucky to walk through ladders: "Imagine how unlucky you would be to walk under a ladder and the window cleaner's bucket tips over you? Maybe not unlucky but being a bit silly and definitely soggy."

A window washer near the Oak Bay/ Victoria border narrowly escaped injury this morning when a car plunged through the second storey of a building. Around 10:30 a.m. a 79-year-old man drove his grey Toyota Matrix over two parkade curbs through the glass at 1625 Oak Bay Ave., a three-story commercial building, and onto the street, said Const. Peter Lane. The car plunged into a concrete wall and flipped onto its roof. A window cleaner was on the ladder cleaning third floor windows adjacent to the exit site. “Had he been positioned just a few feet over we would have had a fatality,” said Lane. The driver was taken to hospital with what police say appear to be non-life-threatening injuries. Police say it appears the accident was the result of driver error and confusion.

Halloween trick is no treat for shop owners left to clear mess: A West Port shop owner targeted by Halloween vandals has slammed a police campaign aimed at cutting down on anti-social behaviour, writes Kenny Paterson. Operation Gremlin was launched last week with Lothian and Borders police officers asking shopkeepers not to sell eggs or flour to youngsters. But despite this, six Selkirk shops on Market Place and West Port awoke on Sunday morning to find they had been splattered with both substances. And one of the victims, Hazel Cowburgh, owner of The Needle Point, believes the high-profile campaign had encouraged the attackers rather than scared them off. Mrs Cowburgh suggested footage from a CCTV camera situated on West Port should be used to expose the trick or treat culprits. She added: “Why hasn’t footage from the camera been circulated to newspapers by the police? I’m sure the people who threw the eggs and flour would not do so again if they knew they had been caught on camera.”
A police spokeswoman said they have received no complaints about the shop attacks in Selkirk, and labelled Operation Gremlin – which also covers Guy Fawkes celebrations – as a success. She said: “Obviously it has been distressing for the shopkeepers involved but this was a one-off and as it was not reported it must be regarded as a minimal incident. “The campaign was made high profile by the media interest, not by the police. Whether this triggered these attacks in Selkirk we will not know. “Police officers were able to positively interact with youngsters during the operation and although we can’t stop every act of anti-social behaviour, we believe the numbers of calls received will be fewer than last year’s Halloween period.”

Cheltenham regulars strip for charity: With only a carefully placed bar to cover their modesty, at least it's all for a good cause. Bar staff and drinkers at the Five Alls pub, in Bath Road, Cheltenham, are following in the footsteps of Calendar Girls and getting naked in aid of the Psoriasis Association. They have stripped off in memory of pub regular Martyn Holder who died from a psoriasis-related disease. Several pictures for the 2010 calendar have already been shot at the Leckhampton pub, with the final photographs being taken at the end of this week. Close friend Jonny Hart, 41, said he was quite happy to peel off his clothes for the cause. The window cleaner can be seen exposing his derriere as he stretches to clean the pub's windows. Jonny said: "It was a great laugh. I didn't feel nervous because it was just a bunch of guys doing something for their mate. Martyn was a very close friend of mine. I'd known him since I was 17 years old.

Mourning the loss of soaping: Three days after Halloween and around town the windows don't look any cleaner than they did the last day of October. I guess kids really don't soap windows anymore. As the owner of more windows than Gayle can get me to regularly wash, I guess I should be grateful that this is one Halloween tradition that's gone the way of the stolen outhouse and free candy X-rays at the local ER.
The soap had to be Ivory. Softer than Dial or Lifebuoy, when dragged across plate glass, even on a chill autumn evening, it left a nice, thick, legible white line with no crumbling. No question, if you were going to go window soaping, the soap of the pros was Ivory. Paraffin, on the other hand, demanded hours of scraping with a single-edge razor blade and even then "yer dum" could be discerned in the frost and fog until it was finally vaporized by the July sunshine. Wiser than we usually credited them, grown ups took steps to defend themselves and their windows against the annual assault by canning wax.

Hope fades of finding missing Padiham man alive: The family of an Alzheimer’s sufferer who has been missing for 19 days say they have all but given up hope of finding him alive. Jesse Shaw, 83, was last seen leaving his home of 18 years in Ingham Street at around 4.30pm on October 17. Only hours earlier he had been seen “laughing and joking” at his grandson’s 18th birthday party, the last time many of his family saw him. Police, family, friends, and even total strangers have all helped comb the countryside of East Lancashire over the last two-and-a-half weeks, but they have failed to find Jesse. Jesse, who has suffered from Alzheimer’s for four years, has spent all his life in Padiham and worked down the pits before starting his own window cleaning business, as well as playing for Padiham Football Club. Keeping it local could be key to surviving crunch in Ludlow: At a time when many shops and businesses are fighting for their lives in Ludlow, one of the town’s best-loved centres of entertainment is plotting a course for others to follow. Ludlow shopkeepers are in many cases looking for salvation from the run-up to Christmas, which for some may be a make or break time. Local tradesmen are also employed where possible to carry out work on the building and also for maintenance tasks such as window cleaning.

Pressure Cleaner Injured In Chemical Explosion: ROYAL PALM BEACH, Florida: A pressure cleaner was injured after some chemicals he was mixing exploded. The incident occurred at about 11 a.m. outside 128 Derby Lane. Fire-rescue crews inspected the chemicals that were used at the time of the explosion. Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue District Chief Robin Herring said the owner of Kevin's Pressure Cleaning was mixing chemicals in a 5-gallon bucket when he was injured. Herring said it was possible the man was smoking at the time. "We don't know whether the chemicals mixed caused the reaction or the actual fumes from the chemical, plus the smoking," Herring said. The man suffered chemical burns to his chest and a laceration to his cheek. He was taken to Palms West Hospital.

Rotarians inaugurate clean windows project: The Rotary Club of Hot Springs Village is about to "brighten a few days." Earlier this month, the club's board approved a new, hands-on service project called "Clean Windows for a Brighter Day." On a designated work day in late October, Rotary Club members and their families will tackle window washing for Village residents who can no longer accomplish that task on their own. The idea originated with Paul Coy, associate pastor of Christ of the Hills United Methodist Church. As voiced by Coy, "There is no greater need in our community than for someone to help house-bound Villagers see the outside world through clean windows." The project is being led by Rotarians Leona Hess and Craig Blackburn.

Custodial staff adapts to $1.25M cut: Drastic budget cuts occurred in waves during the last 10 years at the University of Cincinnati, and the custodial department received the brunt of it. Working around a $1.25 million budget cut for the 2009-10 academic year, the custodial staff is adapting to the increased number of students on campus with a decreased number of maintenance resources. “We have lost vacancies through budget reductions for almost every year for the past 10 years in our maintenance, housekeeping and grounds departments,” said Rick Wiggins, director of facilities management. “This results in the reduction of service frequencies and increased deferred maintenance.” All window cleaning is contracted outside of UC.

World's tallest building Burj Dubai is crane-free: The last crane was down by the third week of October. The building, when completed, will meet all four criteria listed by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) – the body that classifies the world's tallest structures.
CTBUH measures the height of buildings to the structural top, the highest occupied floor, the top of the roof and the tip of the spire, pinnacle, antenna, mast or flag pole. Emaar said last month that the Burj Dubai tower has accomplished a world record for the highest installation of an aluminium and glass façade. Keeping the tower façade clean will be the next engineering challenge, it said. "To guarantee that every corner of Burj Dubai sparkles, 18 window-washing units are built into the tower," said the statement.

Tom Snyder gained national fame as the host of Tomorrow with Tom Snyder (more commonly known as The Tomorrow Show), which aired late nights from 1973–1982. It was a talk show unlike the usual late-night fare, with Snyder, cigarette in hand, alternating between asking hard-hitting questions and offering personal observations that made the interview closer to a conversation.
