The Bermondsey Caveman gets a job! - The Stone Age resident currently perched on a Clements Road roof looks set for a spot of window cleaning, judging by a photo sent in by a News reader.

Eagle-eyed Bermondsey residents will have spotted an unusual addition to SE16 this month: a Stone Age caveman in Clements Road! However, it appears that the caveman’s days of lounging around of garage roofs are over – at least judging by a photo sent in to the News by reader Elizabeth Bond.

She noticed the model is now wearing a harness and decked out with window-washing equipment. Elizabeth told the News: “Whoever has changed him into a window cleaner has a cracking sense of humour and has made my morning walk to the station. “I’m loving my walk to work at the moment. 8am turn the corner in Clements Road and get to wave at my new friend.”

The life-sized dummy – dressed like a caveman with a long brown wig – appeared on top of a garage on Clements Road one night on January 29. Now the statue has become a bit of a ‘local landmark’, according to the woman who discovered it. Residents were quick to notice the strange figure with people climbing the high garage to take selfies with the dummy. Valerie Hawtin, 57, said she found the Bermondsey caveman in her front garden one Friday night.

She said: “It was quite late on the night and I took some rubbish out into the front garden to put in the bin. I saw this dark figure and it scared the life out of me. It took a while before I realised it was a life size dummy of a caveman. “It had just been dumped in my garden but I don’t have a clue who did it. It was probably just rubbish because the dummy only has one arm, so was probably of no use. “I didn’t really mind that it was dumped in my garden because I thought it was quite quirky.” Valerie’s son Christopher, 33, decided to put the dummy on top of the garage so it could be easily seen by passersby.

Safe Use of Extension Ladders - Workers who use extension ladders risk permanent injury or death from falls and electrocutions. These hazards can be eliminated or substantially reduced by following good safety practices.

OSHA's Fall Prevention Campaign: This is part of OSHA's nationwide outreach campaign to raise awareness among workers and employers about the hazards of falls from ladders, scaffolds and roofs. The educational resources page gives workers and employers information about falls and how to prevent them. There are also training tools for employers to use and posters to display at their worksites. Many of the new resources target vulnerable workers with limited English proficiency.

OSHA has partnered with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) - Construction Sector on this nationwide outreach campaign to raise awareness among workers and employers about common fall hazards in construction, and how falls from ladders, scaffolds and roofs can be prevented and lives can be saved. Here's how:

PLAN ahead to get the job done safely: When working from heights, such as ladders, scaffolds, and roofs, employers must plan projects to ensure that the job is done safely. Begin by deciding how the job will be done, what tasks will be involved, and what safety equipment may be needed to complete each task.

When estimating the cost of a job, employers should include safety equipment, and plan to have all the necessary equipment and tools available at the construction site. For example, in a roofing job, think about all of the different fall hazards, such as holes or skylights and leading edges, then plan and select fall protection suitable to that work, such as personal fall arrest systems (PFAS).

PROVIDE the right equipment: Workers who are six feet or more above lower levels are at risk for serious injury or death if they should fall. To protect these workers, employers must provide fall protection and the right equipment for the job, including the right kinds of ladders, scaffolds, and safety gear.

Different ladders and scaffolds are appropriate for different jobs. Always provide workers with the kind they need to get the job done safely. For roof work, there are many ways to prevent falls. If workers use personal fall arrest systems (PFAS), provide a harness for each worker who needs to tie off to the anchor. Make sure the PFAS fits, and regularly inspect all fall protection equipment to ensure it's still in good condition and safe to use.

TRAIN everyone to use the equipment safely: Falls can be prevented when workers understand proper set-up and safe use of equipment, so they need training on the specific equipment they will use to complete the job. Employers must train workers in hazard recognition and in the care and safe use ladders, scaffolds, fall protection systems, and other equipment they'll be using on the job.

OSHA has provided numerous materials and resources that employers can use during toolbox talks to train workers on safe practices to avoid falls in construction. Falls from ladders, scaffolds and roofs can be prevented and lives can be saved through three simple steps: Plan, Provide and Train.

Window Cleaning Equipment Falls From 32-storey Tecom Tower

Window cleaning equipment falls from 32-storey Tecom tower (Dubai): 1 dead, 1 hurt - Five vehicles damaged: A window cleaning equipment snapped from the 34-storey Al Shaiba Tower A in Tecom, killing one person and leaving one person injured. According to eye witnesses, the two passers-by were in the area to deliver fruits and vegetables. "One of them tried to run away upon seeing the object falling down. He was hit while he was running," said a building employee. While both men were taken to hospital immediately, the seriously injured man, a Pakistani, did not make it, according to unofficial sources. The nationality of the injured person is not known yet.

The accident was caused by the collapse of a window-cleaning cradle, installed on the building. According to the building management, the company was hired to install the equipment only. "They were attaching it to the building floor by floor. When they reached the 31st floor, it collapsed," said a building manager. As a result, one balcony of an apartment on the 31st floor was hit, after which it plunged down. "My wife and her father were at home when it happened. I was at work," said the Egyptian resident of the apartment. "She called me to say that there was a lot of glass and I had to come home. When I entered the apartment, I saw a huge hole in the wall. The entire balcony had come off."

Below the building, the damage is great. Five vehicles have been crashed, four of them are totally damaged. One of the vehicles is a truck belonging to the unfortunate delivery men. "I was sitting on the terrace to drink a coffee while it happened. Suddenly I saw the object flying down. I took my coffee and I started running," said the Syrian Mahmoud Kattan (30), who works at Hair Fiesta, the hair salon under the building. His colleague Ibrham (34) from Egypt had a day off, but was woken up by the loud sound of the collapse, as his apartment is located on the 34th floor. "I suddenly saw the object flying by my apartment window. The sound was crazy, I was in shock.”

Similarly, Bonita (36), a South African resident on the 32nd floor was shocked by the intense noise when the object fell down. "At first, I did not dare to come close to the apartment window. I heard that loud sound and then saw a cloud of dust. It was as if the building was going to collapse." When she decided to take a look out of the window, she saw a body lying on the street. "At that point, he was moving his arm, he was still alive." The accident took place just after 11am and Dubai ambulance and police personnel are still at the scene. The area has been cordoned off, although residents are permitted to enter the building.

The accident created a whole in the wall of the living room.

EARLIER STORY: Window cleaning equipment fell from the 32-storey Al Shaiba Tower A in Tecom, injuring at least two people. The equipment landed on a couple of passers-by, causing serious injury to one, Dubai Ambulance personnel told Emirates 24|7. A supermarket staffer in the building said the seriously injured person was a Pakistani delivery boy who worked in the area. Cars parked next to the building were also damaged., with at least four badly damaged. The area is still cordoned off. The accident took place just after 11am and Dubai ambulance and police personnel are still on the scene. "I suddenly heard a loud noise as if the building was falling apart," said Bonita Carr, a South African resident living on the 32nd floor. "When I looked down the balcony, I saw something had fallen down."

Window cleaning cradle collapse: man dead after accident in Tecom, Dubai -  One man was killed and another injured when a window cleaning cradle fell from a 34-storey building in Tecom after its ropes snapped. The accident happened early on Tuesday morning at the Al Shaiba Tower in Tecom. The victim died in hospital on Tuesday afternoon. The falling cradle damaged 12 vehicles parked in front of the residential building, throwing up debris in a 200-metre radius. Stones and pieces of equipment were strewn under cars and across the pavement. Colonel Abdul Qader Al Banay, Director of Jebel Ali police station had earlier told Gulf News two were injured when the cleaning platform fell and some cars parked under the building were also damaged.

2 arrested after 3 injured in Tecom tower window-cleaning cradle plunge:  Two men have been arrested after a window-cleaning cradle plunged from a Dubai skyscraper, injuring three people below. The trio, who are all Asian, were on the street next to Al Shaiba Tower in Tecom about 10.45am yesterday when the unmanned platform fell from the 34-storey building. Initial reports suggested one man had been killed. However, last night the head of Jebel Ali Police Station, Brigadier Abdul Kader Al Banay, said three men had been injured and were being treated at Rashid Hospital. He said one of the men was in a critical condition.

An eyewitness shared what he saw, along with graphic photographs of the accident, on a blog. He said: “There was a strong sound of squeaking glass smashing followed by a boom. People rushed to the street to find the damage on the ground. “With God’s mercy only, the cars parked in front of the buildings were empty except for an unlucky delivery truck. The poor labourer unloading the truck received a direct hit.”

Meanwhile, Al Banay said: “The cradle collapsed and the men tried to escape but pieces of the machine fell on them.” Al Banay added: “The cradle landed on a deep-freeze van. Five other vehicles were also damaged.” Police said they have arrested the cleaning company owner and a supervisor who were responsible for putting up the equipment on the building. They are continuing to question them. The eyewitness said: “Police and rescue workers arrived almost instantly at the scene and the paramedics tried to rescue the badly injured man.”

Two injured as window-cleaning equipment falls in Dubai’s Tecom tower: Two men were injured and several cars damaged on Tuesday morning when window-cleaning equipment fell from a 34-storey tower in Tecom. There were unconfirmed reports that one of the injured men later died in hospital. “The whole building shook,” said a resident who lives on the 30th floor of Al Shaiba Tower A. “I was sitting with my cat on my lap and we both shook because of the noise.” By the time the resident, who asked not to be named, went downstairs to check on the noise, police were there and an ambulance had already taken away the two injured.

One of the two men was delivering fruit and vegetables to a supermarket at the building. “There were vegetables and bananas strewn everywhere,” said the witness. “The whole street was scattered with pieces of metal.” Several cars parked next to the entrance of the building were severely damaged, while other nearby vehicles also had minor damage. Apartment windows on one of the upper floors of the building also appeared to be damaged. One resident said she was afraid for her safety as similar equipment is mounted on the roof of tower B of the complex.

Maintenance cradles are safe, Dubai Municipality official says: An official at the civic body said on Wednesday that residents should not have to worry for their safety when cleaning and maintenance works are carried out in their building as all equipment are approved by the Dubai Accreditation Centre. The affirmation came a day after a cradle used to hoist workers on the exterior of a building fell from a 34-storey residential building in Tecom on Tuesday killing one man and injuring another passer-by.

According to Dubai Municipality, either the building owners or the building’s administration are responsible for providing an adequate and reliable maintenance service which includes providing cradles used to clean the glass panels. “Buildings with window curtains have to be designed and built in a way that allows room for cradles to be used on as there are several models of cradles. Before the building is approved, the building’s management has to first test the cradle and ensure that it works properly, and that can only be done by obtaining a certificate of inspection from a private company that attests such equipment,” said Ahmad Khalil, principal safety engineer at the Building Department, Dubai Municipality.

Khalil explained that the private companies attesting the equipment have to be approved by the Dubai Accreditation Centre, and that the responsibility of providing periodic maintenance has to be carried out by the building’s administration. “The management of buildings should never look for ways to cut costs and should always ensure that they are providing residents with services that have been verified and approved by the relevant authorities,” he said. Khalil pointed out that accidents may arise from faulty cradles if the equipment has not been regularly maintained, if the maintenance companies hired do not have the license to operate such equipment, or are generally incautious to following safety procedures.

Men injured in Dubai window-cleaning cradle fall expected to recover:  Both men injured when a window cradle fell from a 34-storey tower on Tuesday morning are expected to make a full recovery, the regulator of the free zone where the tower is located said on Thursday. The Dubai Technology and Free Zone Authority, the regulator for Tecom, the area where Al Shaiba Tower A is located, said a preliminary investigation has been completed. “While we are prohibited from disclosing full details at this time, we can confirm that no fatalities resulted from the incident,” it said. The authority said one man remains in hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. A second suffered minor facial injuries and has already been released from hospital.

“We will continue to work with Dubai Police and other authorities throughout the course of the investigation and will take appropriate action once the process has been completed.” The two men were hurt when the unmanned cradle fell about 10.45am. Several cars were damaged and some windows on surrounding buildings appeared to be damaged. Tecom Investments released a statement, saying it had been in touch with the two injured men “to check on their welfare and gain a better understanding of what occurred”.

Authorities deny reports of fatality in crane fall in Dubai: Tecom, DTMFZA say two workers were injured in the accident, preliminary investigation completed. Authorities have denied reports about a man’s death after a window-cleaning platform crashed from the 34th floor of a tower in the Tecom area on Tuesday morning. The Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone Authority (DTMFZA) on Thursday confirmed that there was no fatality in the incident as reported by a section of the media.

The DTMFZA said it has completed its preliminary investigation into the incident at Al Shaiba Tower A.  “While we are prohibited from disclosing full details at this time, we can confirm that no fatalities resulted from the incident.” The authority said one man was in hospital following prompt medical treatment and is expected to make a full recovery. “The second man sustained minor facial injuries in the accident and has already been discharged.  We will continue to work with the Dubai Police and other authorities throughout the course of the investigation and will take appropriate action once the process has been completed,” its statement added.

Tecom Investments also issued a similar statement. “We are pleased to confirm that the incident at Al Shaiba Tower A did not result in any fatalities, contrary to initial media reports. DTMFZA and Tecom Investments have been in direct contact with the two men injured in the incident to check on their welfare and gain a better understanding of what occurred. We will continue to liaise with DTMFZA, the regulator for the area, and provide our assistance in resolving this matter,” it said.

Khaleej Times had reported that the men were working under the platform, on the ground floor, when the collapse took place. Eyewitnesses said they were stunned when they heard a loud noise and saw the crane come crashing down on top of three workers. The crane also caused damage to six vehicles in the area, one of which was still occupied by its driver, as well as the injury of two passers-by. As a result of the collapse, windows on the 31st floor were also damaged.

Man Found Hanging With Window Cleaning Equipment

Firefighters recover the body of a man who was found hanging by a rope from the edge of a balcony of a downtown building at 12th and J Streets Monday morning April 1, 2013, in Sacramento, Calif. Officials said they believe the death was accidental.

Dead man is found dangling from downtown Sacramento high-rise: Sacramento authorities are investigating the death of a man whose body was found dangling outside a downtown building. At some point Monday morning, it appears the man tied a rope around himself, authorities said. However, he was tied in seated position like a rappeller. The rope was tied off with a window washing anchor, and fire officials believe that that anchor could have held his weight. But they don't think he was a window washer.

Around 7:45 a.m., a person in another building reported seeing the man hanging near 12th and K streets. Rescuers soon reached the man, took him down, and confirmed that he was dead. The man was at least nine stories above the ground. The Sacramento Bee reported that the man had two pieces of rope looped around his body in a style used by rock climbers. Battalion Chief Marc Bentovoja told the Bee the department had no reason to believe the man's death was a suicide. "It looks like accidental more than anything else," said Bentovoja.

Man found hanging from Sacramento high-rise: SACRAMENTO - There was a spray can and an etching tool found on the roof where a man was found hanging from a window-washing hook high above downtown Sacramento Monday morning, police said. The dead man may possibly have been a graffiti "tagger", according to police officer Michelle Gigante.

Police and firefighters were called to the building at 1201 K Street after employees in an adjacent building spotted the man hanging around 7:45 a.m. Firefighters brought in a tactical rope team for a possible rescue, but quickly determined the man was dead.

Rescue workers were able to retrieve the man's body and determine his death had likely been accidental. "The rope was clover-leafed around his body, it's a common knot that we use, and it tends to be self-cinching, the knot is, and with his body weight hanging on the rope, it looks like that might have been what tightened the rope up on him," said Battalion Chief Marc Bentovoja. According to Bentovoja, responders believed the man had anchored himself to a window-washer's hook on the 17th floor and then rappeled over the edge. Investigators were examining evidence to determine why the man was rappeling in the first place.

Man found hanged from downtown building identified by coroner: The Sacramento County Coroner's office has released the name of the man whose body was discovered Monday morning hanging from rope outside the 16th floor of a downtown building. He was identified as Craig Michael Fugate, 30, of Vancouver, Wash. The coroner's website lists the cause of death as undetermined. Sacramento police spokeswoman Michele Gigante said Fugate apparently died accidentally while trying to vandalize the building's exterior.

Battalion Chief Craig Wiedenhoeft, of the Sacramento Fire Department, said Fugate accidentally asphyxiated himself. Wiedenhoeft said the rope that looped around his chest and legs had constricted him. "He got pulled into a fetal position when the rope cinched up on him," he said. It wasn't known Monday how Fugate reached the top of the high-rise, known locally as the "Ban Roll-on building," 1201 K St.

According to the Wiedenhoeft, the man used an antiquated mountaineering technique to begin his descent. He used a rope left by window washers to descend to a landing on the 17th floor. Then, after retying the rope, he descended to the 16th floor, Wiedenhoeft said. Local climbing experts said the "classic rappel" technique is seldom practiced. It uses friction from the rope against the body at various points to slow the descent. The victim was noticed at 7:50 a.m., and firefighters recovered the body. Gigante said markers, glass etching tools that could be used to deface glass, and spray paint were found at the scene.

Window Cleaners Attacked & A Window Cleaner Assault

Four sentenced for violent attack on window cleaners in Barnet: Four yobs have been sentenced after randomly attacking two window cleaners in Barnet. Three were jailed at Wood Green Crown Court on November 17 for the attack that saw both victims treated in hospital. Sarah Mitchell-Caddel, 21, of Tarling Road, was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years, with a six-month curfew. Daniel Chandler, 22, of Benedict Way, was sentenced to four years in prison, Danny Lee Thurgood, 20, of Juliana Close, was sentenced to two years in a young offenders institute and Jordan Grant, 21, of The Market Place, Falloden Way, was sentenced to three years in prison.

The group attacked the window cleaners in Ballards Lane as they worked on April 13 near the junction with Claverly Grove. When the victims, aged 45 and 51, asked them not to tamper with their equipment, Thurgood and Chandler attacked both men. One of the victims suffered a broken nose. Thurgood fled the scene and Chandler walked away but returned with Jordan and Mitchell-Caddel, who picked up a nearby cleaner’s pole and handed it to Chandler. He and Grant then beat the second victim.

A CCTV mounted in Ballards Lane captured the attack and the CCTV operator alerted the police. Chandler, Grant and Mitchell-Caddel fled the scene when the police arrived, leaving the second victim with severe cuts to his face and head. Grant and Mitchell-Cadel were quickly caught in the immediate area and Chandler and Thurgood were later identified and arrested. The first victim suffered a broken nose and the second victim needed 19 stitches to his face and head.

Window cleaner raped disabled woman: A Preston window cleaner followed a severely disabled woman home and sexually assaulted her before he returned the next day and raped her. Andrew Richardson, (pictured) 31, of Thornton Road, Morecambe, was jailed indefinitely on Wednesday for public protection after he admitted taking advantage of his "extremely vulnerable" victim who he met on Morecambe promenade. Sentencing at Preston Crown Court, Judge Norman Wright said the defendant took advantage of his victim as he subjected her to an "appalling and horrific" ordeal. Richardson pleaded guilty to rape and sexual assault at an earlier hearing but initially lied to detectives that sex had been consensual between the pair.

Duncan Birrell, prosecuting, said the woman, in her 50s, had been out walking her dog on June 18 when Richardson approached her and struck up a conversation. "The prosecution say that it would have been immediately obvious to the defendant that she was vulnerable," he said. He exposed himself to her and then followed her home where he effectively forced himself in and then sexually assaulted her. Richardson went back to her home the next day and again put his foot in the door as she opened it. He went on to rape her and the ordeal only stopped when the woman's care support worker called in. Richardson lied that he was a relative and left the address before the victim was found upstairs in her bath.

Michael Hayton, defending, said his client had lived a good life until the collapse of his relationship with his long-term partner and mother of his child. He lost his job as a manager at an estate agent in Morecambe through heavy drinking and had then set up his own window cleaning business. His pre-sentence report said the defendant had only shown a superficial understanding of what he had done and did not fully appreciate the effects of his actions. Mr Hayton said although the offences were "extremely serious" they could be treated as "a one-off" as he argued for a determinate sentence.

Judge Wright disagreed and said Richardson should serve at least four years behind bars before he could be considered for parole. Addressing the defendant, he said: "These are serious matters. They were horrific and appalling.and can provoke nothing but utter revulsion  from anyone learning what you did." He concluded that the absence of information on what triggered the offences meant he could not be satisfied that Richardson posed no significant risk to the public in future. Richardson also pleaded guilty to stealing a small amount of money from the woman on June 18 and was given eight months in jail, to run concurrently.
