IWCA & GANA: Proper Procedures for Cleaning Architectural Glass Products

The International Window Cleaners Association (IWCA) and Glass Association of North America (GANA) the have partnered together to provide an updated edition of the Proper Procedures for Cleaning Architectural Glass Products Glass Informational Bulletin (GIB). Architectural glass products play a major role in the comfort of the living and working environment of today's homes and commercial office spaces by providing natural daylight, views of the surroundings, thermal comfort and design aesthetics. Glass usage and condition often affect our selection of where we live, work, shop, play and seek education. This GIB describes cleaning procedures that generally apply to most architectural glass products.

"This joint technical Bulletin is the pinnacle of a huge cooperative effort between GANA and IWCA.,” shares Paul West, IWCA Glass Committee Chair. “The end result is real world cleaning guidelines that will assist in maintaining the integrity of architectural glass surfaces."

Urmilla Sowell, GANA Technical Director, shares her thoughts on the importance of the joint effort between GANA and IWCA. “GANA’s Tempering Division members were happy to partner with IWCA on this important document. This bulletin helps promote best-practice approaches for entire glazing industry.”

Cleaning With Cow Urine

Could it be the chemical of choice for the future window cleaner? They are also selling cow urine cola (Cow-Cola).
Could cow urine replace phenyl as a hospital disinfectant? Moves are being made in India to replace traditional hospital disinfectants with cows' urine. New Delhi congress official Parminder Bhamra claims to use the substance in his home every day. He says it kills germs and is easily available. "I get it from the nearby cattle shed," he said. "I'm sure even hospitals can be cleaned properly using it."

His words come as a pilot scheme is set up at a Jaipur hospital where cows' urine is to replace phenyl as a disinfectant over a 15-day period. The Rajasthan government has tasked a committee of doctors with analysing the use of Gau Clean - a product based on refined cows' urine - in various medical settings to assess its disinfectant properties.

The product will be tested in intensive care wards, on items of medical equipment and on hospital floors. If proved effective it is thought that cows' urine could become a new source of income for cow-keepers. "Once 'Gau Clean' gets its licence it can be used in other government offices and buildings - and people will even buy it from the market," said Otaram Dewasi who heads up Rajasthan's cow-rearing ministry.

Cow urine is already the base ingredient for a number of products in India including shampoos, soap - and even a health drink. A floor cleaning agent is produced at a cow urine refinery that opened in Jalore earlier this year. And the substance is also used as a folk medicine in Myanmar and Nigeria.

Use Cow Urine to Clean Hospitals, Urges Mumbai Corporator (Mumbai):  Congress corporator Parminder Bhamra owes his good health to cows - not just for the nourishing milk, but also the 'germ-killing' urine that has been used to clean his home all his life. And now, if he has his way, hospitals across Mumbai could soon be sanitised using cow urine. "Gomutra has been used for this purpose since ages. I use it at home every day. It kills germs and is easily available; I get it from the nearby gaushala (cattle shed). I am sure even hospitals can be cleaned properly using it," said Bhamra.

The corporator from Malad has put forward a proposal in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, seeking that both public and private hospitals be cleaned with cow urine. On the other hand, top BMC health officials sounded unsure about using gomutra for hospital hygiene but tiptoed around the subject like a sacred cow. "Gomutra has been used by individuals for cleaning since ancient times, according to ayurveda. But I am not sure about its usage in hospitals," said Dr Mahendra Wadiwal, in-charge of BMC's peripheral hospitals.


However, Dr V L Deopurkar, former director (Research) Nagpur Veterinary College and associate dean of Bombay Veterinary College minced no words on the topic: "Gomutra will never be accepted as a cleaning agent because of want of scientific data on it. Unfortunately in our country, many politicians are uneducated. Gomutra is used for agriculture purposes, but never for cleaning."

Even at the Go Vigyan Anusandhan Kendra (GVAK), which has been researching the properties and uses of cow urine for close to two decades, experts did not seem keen on its application in sanitation of hospitals. "Gomutra has anti-fungal, antibiotic and anti-oxidant properties, along with disinfectant elements. We have 300 plus patents in 40 plus countries of various products made from gomutra, but we neither manufacture nor do we promote it as a disinfectant. We think that gomutra should be used for more essential purposes such as farming and medicinal benefits to people and animals. Whatever is left over can be used for cleaning," said Sunil Mansinghka, coordinator at the Nagpur-based GVAK, who is also a former member of the government's National Cattle Commission.

Bhamra's proposal is marked on the agenda for the BMC general meeting on November 3, and has already received the backing of his party, which holds 55 seats in the house. It's hardly surprising that the BJP (with 30 seats) has also expressed support, considering the party's ideology and past comments by BJP leaders (see 'Cancer cure'). The Shiv Sena is also expected to get behind the proposal, adding its own strength of 70 seats.

When it was pointed out that it is usually saffron parties that push for the use of cow urine, Bhamra responded, "Congress is the oldest party; we have been around for a long time and it is our ideas that are followed by everyone else. My idea has been supported by my party and I am sure it will be passed in the house."

In March, cow urine was touted as a cure for cancer in the Rajya Sabha by BJP member Shankarbhai N, who had said, "If you want to save yourself from cancer, there is a need to protect cows on a priority because cow urine is effective in curing cancer completely. It can cure cent per cent. I can vouch for it."

How to clean egg off windows - Halloween Window Clean - Year after year our phone starts ringing after Halloween because trick or treat often means “give us a treat or we will egg your windows!”  Is a very sad state of affairs but don’t despair, here is our guide to cleaning egg from your windows.

How to clean egg off windows: The first point to make is that egg is like glue. When it drys it really takes some shifting.  So if you see egg on your windows the first thing to do is to clean it off before it drys.  This can be done just by squirting your window with a hose pipe.  It will leave a horrible drying mark, but at least this will come off easily when your windows are next cleaned by your regular window cleaner. If it is a downstairs window that you can reach, use soft sponge and some washing up liquid.  Allow it to dry a little then buff up the window with some kitchen towel.


If you are unfortunate and the egg has dried onto the window then it is going to be a little more tricky.  If the window is downstairs and you can reach, the best tool to use is a decorators glass scraper.  These are available from most DIY stores for about a pound.  Scrape the glass and finish by cleaning the window as described above.

If the window is upstairs and you don’t want to risk getting the ladder out, then wait for your window cleaner to arrive.  To be honest once the egg dries on the glass then it will no more tricky to remove the egg from the glass if you wait days or weeks.  Good window cleaners will have a professional window cleaners scraper that fits onto a pole. The window cleaner can then remove the egg from the glass safely.  It isn’t worth purchasing the tool your self as a pack of blades for a professional window cleaners scraper will set you back £20.00 and in many cases this alone outweighs the price of the window cleaner removing the egg for you.  The window cleaner will also be more used to using a scraper at a distance and will more than likely do a better job.

As anyone who has been the victim of egging can attest to, eggs are difficult to remove from a home's exterior, especially when they dry. However, with some elbow grease and proper preparation, you can simplify the egg removal process. Here are some suggestions for how to wash egg off a house. 

1. Start cleaning your house as soon as possible. The longer the eggs are on your house, the more they will stick to the exterior surfaces. Due to their high moisture content, eggs remove somewhat easily when the egging is fresh. Prepare cleaning supplies as soon as you notice that your house has been egged.

2. Prepare a bucket of warm water. The water should not be hot. Hot water will cook the eggs and make them stick even more to the exterior of your home. Eggs are protein-based, so they cook quickly (and stick quickly) when exposed to heat. A bucket of warm water from the faucet will give you a good start in removing the egg from your home.


3. Hose the eggs off the exterior of your house. Get out the garden hose and spray the area below where the eggs are present on your siding or other surface. By washing down the area below the eggs, you are creating a surface that they can run down once they are removed. If you don't hose down the area below the eggs, they may stick to the siding. After washing below, spray directly above the egged area. Many times the water running down the surface of the siding is enough to remove the eggs. If you choose to directly spray the egged area without spraying anything else, you run the risk of splattering the eggs and making a worse mess on your home.


4. Use a cleanser with a high alkaline base to scrub the eggs. Sometimes the eggs won't come off any other way than scrubbing them. A cleanser with a high alkaline base works well to break down the protein structure of the egg. Many household cleaners or de-greasers are effective. Look at the pH level in each product. The higher the pH level, the higher the alkaline content.


5. Scrub the area with a brush. Dip the brush into the cleanser or spray the cleanser on the scrub brush, then rub the eggs off of the house's exterior. If necessary, use a long-handled brush or a ladder to reach stains. Rinse the area with warm water. If the stains persist, scrub harder. If the eggs have dried, you may have to scrub and rinse several times to remove them. Repeat this step several times, if necessary.

Window Cleaners Good Deed Goes A Long Way

Community-minded cleaning firm come to aid of Sleaford restaurant after spit found on window - A cleaning business showed its community spirit after someone spat on the window of a Sleaford restaurant. On Thursday, The Little Italy Pizza Co, in Mill Court, posted a photograph on a Facebook page dedicated to Sleaford of spit on its window.

It called on the offender to clean up the mess or see CCTV images of them posted online, saying they had more pressing matters than cleaning up after “vile individuals such as this”. However, by the following morning, LTM Cleaning had taken action. In a letter left at the restaurant, the firm said: “After reading yesterday about what one disgusting person did to your windows I decided to clean them myself because that is just not on. “You have done very well to build what is a community business, getting people to interact with one and other and building links and friendships.”

The Little Italy Pizza Co, which later found the offender had escaped its CCTV cameras, shared an image of the letter on the Facebook page, earning LTM Cleaning widespread acclaim. One Facebook user Georgina Carter said: “It’s reassuring to know that there are still some good hearted people around. Too often we hear about those who constantly take, destroy or behave in otherwise socially unacceptable ways, so to see this is great. Well done LTM may this good deed come back to you many fold.”

Future trends - take decisive action now:  Global facilities services provider ISS published its 2020 Vision study as an assessment of the trends that will shape the facilities management industry between now and 2020. Responsible for compiling this comprehensive document was Peter Ankerstjerne, group marketing director, who is based at the company’s headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark. He speaks exclusively to ECJ about the background to the study and its key findings.

“The next decade is likely to be as turbulent and unpredictable as this one, presenting new challenges and opportunities for our society, our industry, our customers and our company. Maintaining a competitive edge in the future marketplace will require vigilance, imagination and the willingness to take decisive action.” Those are the words of Jeff Gravenhorst, ceo of the ISS Group in his introduction to the 2020 Vision report.

Peter Ankerstjerne, group marketing director, was responsible for the project which was carried out in conjunction with the Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies. 2020 Vision set out to develop a number of global scenarios for the future of the facility management (FM) and services industry. The key drivers were defined as sustainability and technology. ECJ spoke to Ankerstjerne about each of these elements.

“Sustainability is still a moving target,” he explains. “In the macro economy sustainability is something companies are forced to do but it’s not as deeply rooted yet as it will be in 2020. It will become more deeply rooted because it has to.

“The technology trend is key to helping us to support the sustainability trend because development is so much better and more affordable. Of course it still has to be competitive and productive.”

From ISS’ point of view, Ankerstjerne continues, sustainability is just as much about corporate social responsibility (CSR) as it is ‘green’ cleaning. “It’s about health and safety, taking care of people, developing the workforce, etc. One of the greatest challenges is the elderly burden, ie, how do we keep people in the job longer as retirement ages change and people retire older?

“The people management challenge is significant – giving our employees the right ways of working, ergonomic equipment, good chemicals etc. We must also give people a good reason to work in the cleaning industry, by raising its image and perception. And that’s about continuous development.”

In this regard Ankerstjerne believes cleaning service companies may have to take more action in developing skills like language, mathematics, integration into society. “We will start to see more development-oriented employment, whereby providing education to our employees will become part of our responsibility as employers.

“Employees will become a more scarce resource so we will have to work harder to recruit and keep them. This challenge brings with it exciting potential and opportunities. Training will become even more important. It offers organisations a real chance to grow and foster the talent they have within their business.”

In the field of technology too Ankerstjerne feels there are great opportunities. “IT developments are of course important because they affect how we report to clients, manage contracts, etc. “We also see robotics as being a crucial development, a chance to free cleaners up to do other tasks – they could become more multi-tasked service assistants for example.”

So far, however, robotic technology has not been widely adopted by the cleaning sector – which Ankerstjerne attributes largely to the maturity of the technology. “The price does have to come down in order to be more competitive but that will certainly happen,” he points out. “Cleaning service providers must also be a little more innovative and collaborative with the systems manufacturers in order for them to become more widely accepted.”

Adapt and adopt

“In general technology must be adapted and adopted, and then used by cleaning businesses to upskill their people to other areas perhaps. The larger companies like ISS can do that of course – for smaller companies focusing purely on cleaning it is more of a challenge.”

Ankerstjerne goes on: “New technology will also give us better reporting standards – buildings are becoming much more intelligent for example. Real-time information online, GPS systems, will become the norm and that gives us enormous potential.

“This level of reporting means the service provider can become an adviser to the client – which enables us to offer them better services, help them analyse their data and how it can be used. Intelligence means more effective and productive cleaning schedules. For example, if nobody is occupying a room for a period of time why clean it every day? We foresee the job becoming more output-focused, whereby service levels are more in line directly with customer needs.

“Communications technology is very exciting and can certainly be integrated more extensively into the cleaning business. For cleaners working alone at night, for example, GPS systems could be more effectively employed.”

As a service industry cleaning is so vital to its clients because it creates a better environment. Ankerstjerne points out: “A healthier building means a healthier workforce and less absenteeism. This makes our proposition more interesting for a client – we are improving their hygiene levels to make their workforce more effective and more productive.

“We are in a vicious circle of cutting costs – that’s true – but if we add real value we believe that becomes less of a focus. And technology will also help that approach thanks to better equipment, better cleaning chemicals, etc. Because through those technological developments we can deliver savings in water and energy usage, for example. We are demonstrating to clients that we can deliver green solutions and other sustainable systems – and we have a greater ability to document what we do.”

There is still a widespread perception that sustainable systems are more expensive than traditional ones but Ankerstjerne argues this is not the case. “It’s vital to look at the bigger picture and the indirect savings that can result. Less use of energy at night due to daytime cleaning for example. This makes it fundamentally important that we really understand our customers’ operations so that we can carry out full calculations about convenience, water/energy use etc and put our case forward professionally.”

Central to every cleaning operation of course, is the staff, and must be a key area of focus for the FM industry worldwide says Ankerstjerne. “Employees are now not such a scarce resource because of the economic crisis. But this will change so it’s important to achieve better standards of professionalism, cross-border cooperation, training, continuous development. We must encourage cleaners to take pride in what they do and see the bigger picture of the importance of their job as a cleaner.

“This is really one of our biggest challenges and service companies, along with industry organisations, need to stand together more on this. We must protect our employees’ health and safety while also making our operations more efficient, more profitable and more productive.

“There is a real business case for doing this. More motivated and well-rewarded staff give better service and do a much better job for our clients.”

HomeJoy - A Cleaning Tech Company

Behind The Scenes At Homejoy, A Cleaning Startup That Says It’s Really A Tech Company (by Anthony Ha, writer at TechCrunch): If I were ranking startups based on how much I value their services, Homejoy would place pretty darn near the top — every month or so, one of their cleaners comes by my apartment and in two or three hours it becomes more sparkly than I’ve ever been able to make it. All for just 20 bucks an hour.

Homejoy’s been growing quickly, too — it raised $1.7 million in seed funding from Andreessen Horowitz, First Round Capital, and others, and about 10 months after its official launch, the company says it now has a workforce of more than 50 employees in its San Francisco office. And yet … when I’m asked about exciting startups, Homejoy isn’t the first one that comes to mind.

Some of my hesitation, I suspect, is related to the criticism leveled at a number of startups, that they’re basically building services for lazy techies, rather than something practical for “the rest of us.” (A criticism that’s probably too big and complicated to be mentioned in passing in a post that isn’t going to address the issue at all.) (Oops.) But there’s also the question of whether Homejoy is even a tech company at all. Maybe it’s just a cleaning service with a decent website? (The same question might be asked of competing startups like Exec, or of startups offering related services, such as laundry-focused Prim.)

Apparently this is something members of the Homejoy team were thinking about too, because they emailed me recently to suggest a guest column about why Homejoy really is a tech company. I made a counter proposal: How about I come to their office and see the technology in action? They agreed, and earlier this month, that’s exactly what I did.

My tour guide was Mark Linsey, Homejoy’s vice president of engineering. (He’s second from the left in the photo above, which features Homejoy’s five-person engineering team — and yes, they’re hiring.) He told me that he was the company’s first technical hire, joining as a consultant in January and then going full-time in March. Linsey, whose past work includes time as a technical program manager at Amazon and co-founding the social marketing startup Crowdbooster (which, like Homejoy, was backed by incubator Y Combinator), said he was convinced to stay by the size of the technical challenges that Homejoy was facing. Like Amazon, he said Homejoy’s innovation is less about putting up a website for selling things (in this case home cleaning), and more about the backend technology.

“At Amazon, there’s a whole software stack and product team for their warehouses and their internal logistics that they wouldn’t be able to deliver the prices they do without,” he said. Similarly, he claimed that with Homejoy, “It’s like an iceberg. The customer-facing website is 5 to 10 perent of the whole.”

So (to strain the metaphor) what technology is hidden under the water? For one thing, Linsey said Homejoy is “a very data-driven company.” Matching the right cleaner to the right customer involves a lot of factors — not just how the cleaners and customers are rated, but also the routes that can maximize a cleaner’s efficiency throughout the day, not to mention likely transit times in a given geography.


To illustrate this point, Linsey showed me the interface that Homejoy created for cleaners to identify exactly where they are and aren’t willing to work. Originally, he said, cleaners identified their working areas based on zip code, but that turned out to be too broad (for example, many of the cleaners rely on mass transit, so in parts of the San Francisco Bay Area, many of them can only work near a BART stop). Now Homejoy gives them a tool where they can draw the exact, custom borders of their work area.

Linsey also showed me the “demand map” that Homejoy has created to display where its customers and cleaners are. The map works at a several scales, showing supply and demand across the entire United States (and in Canada, where Homejoy recently launched), or zoomed in to a specific geography — he showed me the Bay Area, which was crowded with multicolored pins. One color represented past customers, another showed upcoming appointments, and yet another stood for users who expressed interest in Homejoy but are outside the existing coverage areas.

The map is important for choosing new markets and finding new cleaners, Linsey said, recalling one occasion when the map revealed that Homejoy was starting to get a lot of jobs in the middle of the San Francisco Peninsula, an area where it didn’t have many cleaners (they were more concentrated in San Francisco to the north and the Palo Alto/Mountain View area to the south), so that’s where it focused its recruiting efforts.

The map, like a lot of Homejoy’s technology, was built by Linsey and his team. There’s also a custom CRM system for tracking cleaners, clients, and jobs, and a custom phone system, allowiing cleaners and clients to communicate without actually knowing each other’s phone numbers. (The phone system is nicknamed Zoidberg, a nod to both the TV show Futurama and to Zoiper, the system that the company used before building its own)

None of this eliminates the need for a large customer service team. In fact, Homejoy let me listen in on a call with an initially unhappy client. On the call, a cleaner’s car trouble meant that the company had to scramble to find a replacement (it helps that Homejoy pays some of its top cleaners to remain available on-call), and the aforementioned unhappy customer ended up getting a free cleaning — which seemed to to make up for a lot of the stress.

As for how Homejoy’s approach is working for its cleaners, well, the ones I’ve spoken to have been pretty happy with the service. Special Projects Manager Marlo Struve told me that cleaners make between $12 and $15 an hour, and she noted that they have the freedom to determine where and when they’re willing to work. She also sent me the following quote from cleaner John J. (the company doesn’t identify cleaners by their full names): “Before [Homejoy] I had to solicit jobs myself and now Homejoy is like a household name. It’s really picking up and I don’t have to do as much [soliciting] as I used to [for my services].”

Linsey added that if I had stopped by the office in the company’s early days, I would have seen a very different picture. The work that’s now accomplished by his team’s tools was originally done by co-founders/siblings Adora and Aaron Cheung, who worked out of their apartment and manually matched up cleaners and jobs. Homejoy’s early approach, he argued, embodied Y Combinator founder Paul Graham’s advice that entrepreneurs should “do things that don’t scale” (advice that includes doing a lot of work manually at first, then building technology to automate the bottleneck).

Both Linsey and Struve said that without the technology and systems that were built after Homejoy’s launch, the company could not have grown from one to 26 cities in just over six months. (And by the way, the list of markets where Homejoy is now available includes cities like Atlanta, Phoenix, and Tampa Bay, so maybe this isn’t just for startup douchebags after all …) And for what it’s worth, I was pretty impressed by what I saw — not just by the technology, but by Linsey’s enthusiasm in outlining the problems Homejoy has already solved, and the ones that it still needs to face.

“There’s a lot I think we can improve on in terms of gathering data,” Linsey said. “I also think that Homejoy is not going to be exclusively a cleaning company forever — there are other services on the horizon.”

Solar Panel Cleaning

Solar Panel Maintenance Opportunities: Solar Panels are exposed to the environment – sun, wind, dust, rain etc. Solar panels are very similar to windows, lying flat or at a slight angle which means they get dirty very fast. Pollen, bird droppings, dirt, and dust can build up on solar panels.“Solar Clouding” commonly referred by the panel manufacturers, which means dirty panels and needs to be cleaned on a regular schedule in order to keep them producing at full capacity. There is a 10-15% decrease in solar output when solar panels are dirty.

Solar panels generally require very little maintenance. A few times a year, the panels should be inspected for any dirt or debris that may collect on them. Most manufacturers recommend the cleaning of solar panels every six months. Typically they should be cleaned in March/April when the rainy season has passed and August/September, towards the end of summer. The cleaning services are a necessary part of the system maintenance and also to maintain its warranty.

How to Clean Solar Panels: One can use a garden hose to wash the face of the panels during either the early morning or in the evening. Care should be taken not to spray cold water onto hot panels or there could be a risk of cracking them. There are also automated cleaners, which can be programmed to clean the panels as needed - a good choice if you are in an especially dusty area. Professional solar panel cleaners are also in abundance and can come out periodically to clean them.

Generally the solar panels are dusted gently and then washed using a soft wash brush to lightly scrub the dirt off. One should check with the solar panel manufacturer to know the best way to clean your solar panels. Hard water should not be used for the cleaning. Also check if there is any blockage from the sun like trees or plants. Clean solar panels are worth the effort.

Checking Solar Panel Operation: The only other part of solar panel maintenance is monitoring their energy output and ensuring there are no malfunctions. Check and log the power output on the solar inverters display on a daily or monthly basis. With this data, one can check to see if solar panels are functioning at full efficiency.  Solar panels produce different amounts of power during the year, so keeping a baseline measurement helps.

How To Recharge DI Resin


How to Recharge DI resin by David Sanders: Before starting, I would like to mention that some information available on the web would have you believe that a full body hazmat suit is needed to safely use the two chemicals necessary to recharge de-ionizing resin (DI). If common sense is used, you'll be safe. Most homes have had these chemicals to some extent in the cupboards below the sink. Acids like muriatic or hydrochloride are used to remove scale from showers and toilets. Lye has been used to clear drains and cut grease for years. Your grandparent may have used lye soap also. The muriatic acid is stronger than packaged bathroom cleaners. I did get small amounts on my skin and it felt like a mosquito bite. When I realized that it was not, I washed my hands and all was good. Some chlorine gas comes out of the bottle and when it is mixed, so don't sniff the bottle. I mention this because those without common sense should not attempt this project.

A little more than a year ago I was poking around on the web, I found a few companies that regenerated DI resin. I began to look for a way to do it myself. I ran across an article on reefs.org that explained what I was looking for. Although their finished result was the same as what we do, their canister had a drain. The drain allows the resin to be regenerated in the canisters. Most canisters on the market do not have this drain, so another solution was needed.


First gather up the products needed. The chemicals can be found at Lowe's and the tools at Wal-Mart. The lye is found at Lowe's in the pluming section. It is used for clearing drains and made by a company called Roebic, and is 100% sodium hydroxide (caustic soda), listed as lye on the back of the bottle. The muriatic acid is found in the paint department. The mixing bottles must hold 16 oz. of fluid. I now use an old lye bottle; it is sturdy and holds up to the heat. The two containers used to separate the resins came from Wal-Mart and hold 64 oz. each. I also needed a large colander, window sheer as a filter, a stir stick, 5 oz. measuring cup (large shot glass), two 32 oz. tumblers, and two 5 gallon buckets. When I first did this process I used a turkey baster and coffee filters. The turkey baster was used to separate the resin, and the coffee filters where used to filter the resin. I will show both processes. Obviously, you need a decent amount of used DI resin. During the recharging process, a little bit of resin will be lost, so it is best to have a few cartridges of resin saved up. Read the full process with pictures here.

Use these instructions at your own risk.   The chemicals used in this procedure are very dangerous and must be used with a great deal of caution.  It is recommended that you wear protective gloves and goggles when performing the following procedure.
  • 12 ounce can of Red Devil Pure Lye (good for 2-3 recharges) ~$2
  • One gallon Muriatic acid (good for about 20 recharges) ~$3
  • Turkey baster
  • Plastic container, 1/2 gallon or so... a deep bowl will work
  • Plastic bottle - needs to be fairly tough.  Use one that holds atleast  12 fluid ounces, marked measurements are a bonus
  • Measuring cup, 24 fluid ounce or larger
  • Glass or plastic stirring rod
  • About 5 gallons DI water (tap water will suffice) for rinsing resins
  • 5 gallon bucket
  • Activated filter carbon
  • Rubber gloves/goggles, just in case
How to Clean DI Resin: Deionized resin, or DI resin, is an essential component in the deionization process. The resin is able to bind to and filter out mineral salts, including sodium and copper, thus cleaning water. The filtration process is used anywhere people require high-purity water, including laboratories and fish aquariums. With use, the DI resin will eventually become exhausted and dirty. However, you can recharge and clean your DI resin with chemical baths.
  • Pour 11 oz. of reverse-osmosis deionized water into a 16 oz. glass bottle. Add 3 oz. of lye. Make sure to pour the water in the bottle first, before the lye, to avoid unwanted splashing of the chemical. Seal the bottle with its lid.
  • Place the glass bottle holding the solution into a bucket of ice-cold water. Gently shake the glass bottle and its solution to ensure that the lye doesn't settle on the bottom. Mixing lye and water creates heat, so this step will ensure it's cool enough to work with. Leave the bottle in the ice water for 15 minutes.
  • Put the dirty DI resin you wish to clean in a 64 oz. glass container. Pour the cooled lye solution into this container.
  • Stir the resin and the lye solution together using a plastic or wooden stick. The lye should be evenly dispersed among the resin. Let the mixture sit for five minutes. The DI resins will separate, with the cleaned and charged resins floating to the top. The completely exhausted and dirty resin, which can no longer be used in this state, will sink to the bottom.
  • Collect the cleaned and charged resin from the surface of the solution using a turkey baster.
  • Put the cleaned resin into a coffee filter. Run RO/DI water over the resin to completely remove the lye solution. It is now ready for use. Store it in a secure glass container and put it aside.
  • Separate the exhausted resin from the lye solution using a turkey baster. Place it in a coffee filter and thoroughly wash off any lye solution. Place the cleaned resin in a 64 oz. glass bottle.
  • Mix 6 oz. of muriatic acid with 6 ounce of RO/DI water in a 16 oz. glass bottle.
  • Pour the acid solution into the 64 oz. bottle holding the exhausted resin. Mix it with a stirring stick. Let the solution sit for one hour. The color of the DI resin should change to purple, meaning that it's recharged and clean.
  • Collect the newly-cleaned DI resin from the bottle. Wash the resin with RO/DI water in a coffee filter to ensure you remove all of the acid solution. This resin is now clean and ready for use. Store it in a secure container until you're ready to use it.

Using Mayonnaise to Clean & Other Odd Tips

Using mayonnaise to clean your car and other odd tips: After the dreadful winter of 2011, lots of us are out scrubbing and waxing to try to get our cars back into spring driving shape. As nice as we can get them, you won't believe some of the tricks of the trade that professionals use when it comes to pimping a ride.

Our favorite: mayonnaise. International Aero - one of the world's largest aircraft detailing companies - says it uses a dab of mayo when it is trying to remove tar. Just let the Hellman's (or Kraft, or whatever) rest for about 10 minutes on the gob of goo and then rub. If that doesn't work, go with lighter fluid. 

Borrowing from the aviation industry, here are some other often weird auto-care tips from International Aero:

Paint transfer: To remove paint transfer from minor scrapes with other cars, fences, etc., wet a towel with common lighter fluid and lightly dab the surface, wetting the area for 20-30 seconds. Then, rub the surface lightly and the transferred paint/color will disappear. Don't worry, it won't harm your cured paint, it just breaks down the bonds between the two paints there. Be careful because it is extremely flammable!

Adhesive removal: Time to remove those pesky stickers or decals you've had for years? Again, lighter fluid is a great option as it breaks down the adhesive bonds; follow the same steps as above for paint transfer. This works on glass as well as painted surfaces.

Ink removal: It can be very frustrating when you leave a pen in your pocket and write on new leather seats. To remove ink from leather, dampen a Q-tip with cuticle remover and lightly rub the surface. The ink will be gone in seconds. Just remember to try a spot under the seat first, to make sure the dye in your leather is color-fast and won't bleed.

Streak-free windows: Here's a simple trick to get your window's truly streak free. When you're cleaning the exterior of your windows wipe in an up-and-down motion. When cleaning the inside of the windows, wipe in a side-to-side motion. When you are finished, if there are any streaks, you'll be able to target them by knowing which side of the window they are on, depending on which direction the streaks go.

Water-spot removal: After washing and rinsing your car, remove your spray nozzle from the hose and let the water flow from the hose to cover the entire car. You'll notice the water will sheet off the paint and as a result, there will be less water on the paint to have to dry off. This allows you to dry your car more quickly, use fewer towels, and reduce the chance of having water spots.

Leaky mirrors: Even after a careful car wash, it can be very irritating when your side mirrors leak water all over the doors and leave water spots. To prevent this, after washing and drying your car, fold up a paper towel six times into a wedge shape and slide it in around the perimeter of the mirror between the glass and the plastic housing. This will soak up the water.

Pristine wheels: Use an old (or new) tube sock to clean your wheels. This will protect your hands from corrosive brake dust, and makes it easier to clean tough to reach edges and corners that are hard to get at with a brush. Put your hand in the sock, soak up soapy water and scrub.

Seat & carpet stain removal: Never scrub a stain in a side-to-side motion, it just pushes the contamination into the carpet fiber. Instead, tamp it! Tamping is a technique that breaks up the stain without abrading the fabric, perfect for durable, tightly woven fabrics like automotive carpet and upholstery. Quickly and repeatedly rap (strike) a stain with a tamping brush (available at most big-box stores) until the stain is removed. You'll know you are using too much pressure if the bristles on the brush bend.

Spotless carpets: After shampooing your carpets, clean them a second time with only plain water to rinse the carpet more thoroughly of soapy residue. Soap acts like a dirt magnet, so if you don't follow your cleaning with a rinse only step, your carpets will get dirty again— quickly!

More than a third of people pay for a window cleaner on a regular basis, while a similar number clean their own windows, and a quarter of householders admit their windows hardly get cleaned.
4 million Britons go on a domestic blitz: Even Kim Woodburn and Aggie MacKenzie, the stars of television's How Clean is your House? would be impressed by how much Britain's most domestically challenged households are cleaning up their acts. A new survey by market analysts at Mintel has revealed that four million house-proud Britons spend five hours or more each day cleaning their homes and doing other household chores. Just one in six people spend less than an hour each day on domestic duties, according to the survey of 1,500 households.

The survey reveals that mounting domestic duties such as cleaning, washing and ironing mean that nearly one in ten - eight per cent - of people spend a large part of their day on household chores. Only four per cent spend no time at all keeping the house or garden tidy, while just one in 20 people said they used paid help, such as a cleaner, once or twice a week or even more often.

More than a third of people pay for a window cleaner on a regular basis, while a similar number clean their own windows, and a quarter of householders admit their windows hardly get cleaned. The survey also reveals that the most hated jobs around the home are cleaning the oven, washing windows and getting rid of stains on carpets and upholstery. A spokeswoman for Mintel said: "During the current, more challenging economic environment, paying for windows to be cleaned professionally is one expense that people might have been expected to have cut back on in order to save money. "Nevertheless, more than a third of people still say their windows are cleaned regularly by a window cleaner.

"Over three quarters of adults really care about the house being clean and six in ten derive satisfaction from their housework. Retired people are most concerned about the cleanliness of their homes. "Some 33 million adults claim to spend a lot or a fair amount of time cleaning and tidying their homes. "Only 1.6 million adults do not get involved in cleaning at all, and even fewer claim not to tidy up. "Women are more likely to spend two hours or more on an average weekday on household chores, and men an hour or less. "Spending a lot of time on household chores also shows a bias towards over-45s."

Isobel Robertson, the national chairwoman of the Scottish Women's Rural Institutes, admitted she was surprised at the results of the survey. She said: "I would have thought that spending five hours a day on domestic chores would have been quite normal many years ago when there were fewer women in full-time employment and their job was to look after the home. "But with both men and women leading such busy lives these days and with all the modern gadgets available I do find it surprising that so many people can devote that amount of time to housework every day.

"A lot of our members would happily admit that sometimes housework has to go on the back burner simply because they have so many more interesting things to do. "However, I can also see that people really enjoy cleaning and do it because it gives them a sense of satisfaction and fulfilment. "I think it's important that if people are devoting that amount of time to housework, they are doing it because they enjoy doing it and not because they feel pressurised into having a perfectly pristine home." She added: "There is nothing wrong just keeping on top of chores in the kitchen and bathroom every day and giving the rest of the house a blitz once a week. "Household chores are still important to people even in these modern times."

Dizzy Heights Of Success For Window Cleaners In News


Dizzying heights of success: Most people can recall the image of a man cleaning a window 34 floors above the ground, without a harness, at the Jumeirah Beach Towers in Dubai this year. But, for those who work on high rise buildings, it is no joking matter when the safety of their employees is paramount. Earlier this year, Swiss company Serbot AG launched a robotic cleaning system for windows and façades on high-rise buildings in Dubai. But, for professional rope technicians there will always be a demand for work because machines are susceptible to breakdowns. ‘I have not actually seen one of the robots in action yet,” said Billy Harkin managing director of Megarme an inspection, repair and maintenance provider that specialises in working at high or difficult accessible locations.
“I do think there is a market for such a product given the amount of glass facades in the region, as long as it was a versatile and reliable piece of kit. I don’t, however, see it as a threat to the industry but more as something that will compliment other such services. “It has been our experience that equipment (BMU’s/access systems/machinery/technical equipment/etc.) is usually susceptible to breakdowns and malfunctions in this type of environment so there will always be a need for ever reliable people services.” The real test for companies that specialise in high-rise building environments is to make sure staff are fully trained to a recognised standard of health and safety procedures to minimise any risk of accident or danger to themselves.
Companies follow a set of guidelines by IRATA (Industrial Rope Access Trade Association), which produce qualifications for trained rope access technicians and access specialists. It is a global qualification with a set of protocols to execute work projects safely including rescue operations. “You need to be prepared for all possible outcomes in this industry especially working in this type of climate where people get dehydrated or tired quickly,” said Robin Gibbs, head of trading divisions for Al Serkal Group. “You need to have a rescue plan in place whereby you get people down according to the IRATA code of practice. Once you have those guidelines in place, you can do anything involving work at height including maintenance, cladding, welding, cleaning, drilling, or painting and you can get in and out safely to do the job.”
The Al Serkal Group is a service provider to the FM industry, handling anything from mechanical engineering, to electrical, plumbing and solutions at height. It recently won a contract to clean high level areas of the glass and steelwork of the Meydan Grandstand which has a giant glass bubble building. Gibbs said the work is a time sensitive project because it has to be completed before the racing season kicks off on November 11 this year. “At any one time, we have four or five projects on the go,” said Ed Buckley, a Level 3 operations manager for SKY Riders, which is part of the Al Serkal Group. “Currently, it is the Meydan Grandstand, glazing and safety netting works at the Presidential Terminal at Abu Dhabi International Airport, a full building office clean at the John Buck International Al Mamoura buildings in Abu Dhabi, and on-going work at Dubai Mall, which includes a cleaning service for the food and beverage outlets, where one man will drop down into a 3ft wide vertical duct to clean it inside.”
Buckley said each job has to go through a risk assessment prior to each project to implement a tried and tested safe method of work. “We are talking about projects that are 200m in the air. Each building has its own personality and each job requires its own specification, depending on the client,” he added. “One of our jobs is to make the frame, attach the foliage and hang the lighting banner on the 90ft Christmas tree in Dubai Mall. It’s quite a detailed job but great fun. The most high profile work we have done is cleaning and painting the steelworks inside the seven star Burj Al Arab. It’s a nice sense of achievement to be able to go home and say ‘I did that’,” said Buckley.
Rope access training: Sky Riders currently employ 30 members of staff and each person works on industrial ropes with two points of attachment. It has an affiliation with a training school called Traks Pro which teaches workers how to set the ropes up and how to get each other out in case of an emergency. Level 1 is the entry level for all rope access technicians, Level 2 are experienced technicians who have more training to do with health and safety, knowledge on how to put up the correct rigging and the skills to exercise more technical rescue plans. Level 3 is a senior team leader in-charge of a site and is able to inspect equipment and make site operational decisions. It takes three years to become a supervisor but to start as a novice technician includes a six day intensive training course followed by a day’s assessment exam on site.

WEARING THE PANTS: Whitehorse-born, Tsawwassen-raised Tressa Wood expects to see Wallace-tartan-wearing men climb ladders to clean windows and roof gutters all over North America. She's the CEO of Men In Kilts,which Nicholas Brand and Brent Hohlweg started in 2002 and developed into a 15-staff operation by 2009. The Richmond Chamber of Commerce named them young entrepreneurs of the year. Now, their entrepreneurial eyes are set on the Richmonds in Ontario, Quebec, California, India, Kentucky, Maine, Texas, Virginia, and elsewhere. Enter Wood, who joined Brian Scudamore's 1-800-GOT-JUNK? firm as operations director in 2002 and left as vice-president of operations in 2008. In that time, she said, revenues rose from $10 million to $130 million via some 330 franchisees, many of which she signed.
With 35 staff today, Men In Kilts wants fewer franchisees but with larger operating areas in the one-million-residents range. Wood expects to contract five in 2011 (including Seattle and San Francisco), perhaps 15 in 2012, and a metro-market total between 100 and 150. She's close to two likely early signers. Rob Watson is a 1-800-GOT-JUNK? franchisee, and Nicholas Wood is her four-year husband and father of the eight-month-old and two-year-old children she had while working full-time and taking seven-day maternity leaves.
As for how junk-hauling and window-and-gutter-cleaning differ: "At 1-800-GOT-JUNK? we were pioneering an industry, and had to educate people about the service," Wood said. "This is a very established industry, but not with national franchises or brands." It is also a "fun" industry she said, chuckling about the kilted chap who returned from a particularly windy shift to say: "I'm finally getting the attention I deserve."
Regarding the attention her firm deserves: "You need a more entrepreneurial type of franchisee in the early days, when you are building, testing and refining your systems. They are the types who'll give the feedback you need." They'll also give $60,000 to $120,000 as an entry fee to don their own kilts, "which cost under $100," said Wood, comfortably business-like in tailored slacks.

Marathon man Mike Mackay's weighty challenge: A Montrose man is gearing up to take part in next year's Edinburgh marathon to raise money for two local cerebral palsy sufferers — but not before he loses seven stone. Window cleaner Mike Mackay (34) was inspired to take on the mammoth challenge after hearing of the plight of Rhys Allan (3) and Riley Murray (5). Both boys suffer from severe forms of the disease and Riley's parents need to raise £18,000 to buy him a specially adapted wheelchair. Rhys — who has just returned from a trip to Germany where he received stem cell treatment in a bid to improve his condition — needs physiotherapy and treatment which will cost £9000 per year. Mike said, "Doing a marathon is hard enough — but especially when you have to lose seven stones. "I'm getting weighed weekly and I'm on a high protein, low carbohydrate diet so hopefully that will help." He added, "I'm hoping people will be generous as it's a great cause."

Antón García Abril is 41, but he hasn’t lost his childlike impulse to experiment. Mr. García, an architect, calls it his “madman’s urge to find out” if something can be done. That’s how he explains the urge that drove him to design a house made from pieces of prefabricated infrastructure. The concrete components are affordable and “structurally efficient” and can be assembled quickly, Mr. García said. So quickly, in fact, that the major construction on the two-story house he shares with Débora Mesa, 29, an architect at his Madrid firm, Ensamble Studio, was completed in just seven days, in the summer of 2008. Using a crane, Mr. García’s team assembled the oversize pieces — three giant concrete I-beams originally intended to be part of a bridge, two concrete segments of an irrigation canal and two steel girders — all of which were anchored by a 20-ton granite slab. Once the prefabricated parts were set in place, the structure was enclosed using 35 thick, rectangular pieces of glass. Interior walls, of which there are few, were built using plasterboard.
The remaining work, mostly wiring and plumbing, was finished a few weeks later. The design work, however, took nearly two years to complete. Part of the difficulty was making sure the massive prefabricated parts could be adequately balanced, a painstaking process that involved multiple trials using scaled-down pieces, Mr. García said. The 2,190-square-foot home was built for about 250,000 euros (about $350,000) on a lot Mr. García bought a decade ago (for 200,000 euros, or $280,000) in a gated community here, about 20 miles from Madrid. It has two swimming pools: one in the patio area on the ground floor and the other in a length of irrigation canal cantilevered dramatically from the second floor. Most of the walls are glass, so there is ample natural light, and the couple decided not to install overhead fixtures. There are floor lamps, but only a few. Still, as Ms. Mesa noted: “What we save in electricity, we are paying in window cleaner.”

The British government will review the arrest of six men on suspicion of terrorism during the visit by Pope Benedict XVI to the United Kingdom. The six men—all employees of a cleaning firm, and reportedly of Arabic background—were released after police found that they represented “no credible threat” against the Pontiff. A thorough investigation uncovered no evidence that they had engaged in any terrorist plot.

He also told a great story about how - on the day of that game - Arsene Wenger took the whole Arsenal squad, who were wearing team tracksuits, on a walk around Manchester. Former Scottish Football Association chief executive Jim Farry has died of a heart attack. The 56-year-old had his family around him when he passed away at Hairmyres Hospital, East Kilbride. Wife Elaine and children Alyson, 28, and Ewan, 26, were last night at the family home in East Kilbride in shock at Jim’s death yesterday. Jim grew up in a tenement in Holybrook Street, Govanhill, Glas- gow and went on to become a high flying football bureaucrat.The son of an East End cop, he worked as a landscape gardener, milkman and window cleaner before starting life in Scottish football administration.

The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation has missed its deadline yet again to dismantle the tower at 130 Liberty Street. The former Deutsche Bank building, originally slated for demolition in June 2007, was supposed to be torn down by the end of this year. But construction mishaps have again delayed the project, L.M.D.C.’s Director of City Operations Josh Rosenbloom announced at Monday’s Community Board 1 World Trade Center Redevelopment Committee meeting. Rosenbloom attributed the latest holdup to crane problems. “It’s a very sensitive piece of equipment – the slightest little thing goes wrong in the crane, the computer shuts down,” said Rosenbloom. “It’s nothing major, just a couple of small incidents that took the crane out for a period of time.”The L.M.D.C., Flynn added, should have installed double-paned windows in nearby apartment buildings to minimize the noise impact of the demolition. “It’s hard to demolish a building like this without making noise,” replied Rosenbloom adding that he would consult with his colleagues about possibly scheduling a window cleaning in the nearby apartment buildings.

He is of course referring to Procter & Gamble and Unilever, but has of course forgotten Reckitt Benckiser, makers of the likes of Vanish and Finish and Dettol and Cillit Bang, because he knows absolutely cock all about marketing. But I've plugged them now, so all is well.

As a town built for veterans after World War II, Veterans Day has a special place in the Levittown community. Polly Dwyer, president of the Levittown Historical Society, has provided Levittown Patch with photographs and brief biographies on three veterans who are especially significant to Levittown in honor of this holiday. Steve Buczak was a World War II belly gunner in the Army Air Force, Buczak returned to Levittown to establish a window washing company. They washed all the new Levitt house windows. In his retirement he edited many books on histories of local towns and donated the books to the local libraries. The Levittown Public Library and the Levittown Historical Society were among the recipients. He soon joined the Levittown Historical Society and became a board member and then an officer for few years. He assisted Lynne Mattarrese in the society's  book "The History of Levittown, NY".
