A spokesman for the fire brigade said there was no time to put up an air cushion and they were forced to rely instead on ladders to reach her. Rescuers spent several minutes attempting to free the woman whose leg had become caught on a bracket attached to the conditioning unit.

Meanwhile, the red-faced lady's neighbours and friends watched helplessly from the ground below.

Firefighters eventually managed to haul the stricken pensioner back into the safety of her flat in the Ukraine. The plucky lady escaped unharmed but was treated in hospital for shock following the ordeal.

Fire brigade officials said they had realised the situation was desperate when they arrived and had no time to set up an air cushion. They used a ladder to speedily get to the OAP - who had been hanging for at least 30 minutes before she was helped back inside. The grandmother was taken to hospital suffering from shock.

Graeme Dust, 46, of Holmwood Road, Enfield, was introduced to a man who was actually an undercover policeman, the Old Bailey heard. He admitted soliciting the murder of wife Nina, 46, who was in the public gallery when he was sentenced. She has forgiven her husband and now wants him back, the court was told.

Dust also pleaded guilty to administering poison to her, through adding sleeping tablets to tea and hot chocolate. He denied attempted murder, and this was accepted by the prosecution. Bitter taste Dust had an affair when his 20-year marriage suffered problems, the court heard. On separate occasions he added something to his wife's tea and asked her to drink a pink liquid, before putting sleeping tablets in her hot chocolate as they sat in a cafe. After Mrs Dust said her drink tasted bitter and sent it back, the owner of the business spotted white powder in the cup, said prosecution solicitor Richard Merz.

Dust asked a friend if he knew anyone who could "get rid" of his wife, but the friend went to the police, the court heard. A meeting was fixed for Dust to meet a supposed hitman, who was actually an uncover police officer. Dust told the officer he had tried to poison his wife, adding that he wanted her death to look like an accident or suicide. He received a four-year sentence for soliciting murder and a further two years in prison for the poisoning offence.

Dust had a history of depression, the court heard. Nina, who runs a cleaning firm, would not comment yesterday. Daughter Charlotte, 18, said: "We've got nothing to say."

The meeting with the fake hitman came after 6 months of botched attempts by the defendant to poison his wife by lacing her tea with dangerous levels of sleeping tablets. The defendant’s wife and victim at the centre of the case, 46-year-old Nina Dust, was in court at the Old Bailey in London this week to hear her husband admit to soliciting murder and the administration of noxious substances with intent. The court learned that Mrs Dust had visited the defendant in prison and that there was a wish on her part to reconcile with estranged husband, despite his recent actions.

Mr Dust has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder, this was not been challenged by the prosecution after Mrs Dust revealed she would not supportive of this. The window cleaner hire business owner has no criminal record previous to this incident, although he does have a history of depression. Mr Dust will be sentenced in September pending psychiatric reports.

After "careful consideration" and discussions with Mrs Dust, they decided to leave the charge on the file and substitute an alternative count of poisoning.

The couple are partners in a window cleaning business run from their Enfield home. Prosecutor David Markham said there had been a series of "suspicious incidents" between October last year and April when Mrs Dust "experienced or tasted bitterness" in her drinks. Forensic tests revealed that Dust had been spiking them. As a result of a tip-off to police by a member of the public the Met's Serious Crime Directorate launched an inquiry which led to Dust meeting an undercover officer in April. He was recorded in a car attempting to arrange the murder of his partner, the court heard.

James Scobie, defending, said: "From the recording of the conversation in the vehicle with the undercover officer and this defendant it is clear the discussion is with a view to the murder of his wife." The court heard Dust had a history of depression and other issues but no previous convictions. Mrs Dust, also 45, had shown a "clear determination on her part" to reconcile with him and has visited him in prison. Dust, who appeared by videolink, was remanded in custody for reports and will be sentenced next month.
