Window cleaners' lucky escape in Burnley: Two window cleaners have told of their lucky escape after a lamp post almost crushed their work’s van in Burnley. Lee Pickering and his boss Neil Holt were travelling to work along Centenary Way, just before 7.45am, when the drama unfolded. Earlier that morning an accident involving a Chevrolet car and a Fiat Doblo had seen one of the vehicles career into a 20-foot high metal lamp post, causing the road to be closed for a short period.
Lee, from the Brunshaw area of Burnley, had just been picked up by Neil and the pair were en-route to Great Harwood when they drove past the stricken structure. He said: “We were travelling along Centenary Way when suddenly the police shouted at us to stop and the lamp post toppled over.” Fortunately the pair’s Fiat van had three industrial ladders fixed to the roof, which helped to cushion part of the blow. The ladders were badly damaged and a dent left in the roof.
Neil said: “I don’t know why the police didn’t close the road - they could have diverted the traffic through town.” Lee said: “We were a bit shook up - it’s not every day that a lamp post collapses on top of your van. “Luckily we had the ladders on the roof or we could very well have been killed.”
Police immediately reclosed the road after the incident, and the lamp post was carefully removed. The Fiat van was also taken away by repair contractors. The pair eventually made it to Great Harwood for their round. “We were all right for about an hour or two but then it sunk in, what had happened, and we felt a bit sick,” added Lee. Police are investigating the incident which happened on Friday and why the road was reopened to traffic.
