Injured window cleaner to raise cash for Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance: A window cleaner is rallying support for the heroes who flew him to hospital after he fell from a 15ft ladder, breaking six bones. Tony Bonnett, 35, wants to raise awareness of Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance after he was flown to hospital following the accident at 10.30am on Friday, December 21.
He said: “I want to say a big thanks to the ambulance and air ambulance service that helped me and also people need to be aware that the air ambulance is only supported by charity, so people really need to support them.”
The window cleaner of nearly 20 years was finishing his final window on the second storey of a house in Ascot when the ladder toppled over, sending him crashing to the ground. He said: “I think I span round three times and it was a lottery as to where I could have landed. “It is a miracle I landed on my side and not on my head.”
Tony, of Cricket Field Grove, Crowthorne, was strapped to a full body and neck brace and flown to Frimley Park Hospital, where it was discovered he had broken his shoulder and three ribs, fractured his elbow and pelvis and bruised his lungs. He said: “I was in a lot of pain but the crew were really good – I felt like I was in safe hands. Before I knew it I was in the helicopter and they were giving me the thumbs up and asking if I was alright.”
Tony spent his 35th birthday on December 22 and Christmas in hospital before being released on crutches Thursday, December 27. He said: “I have gained more being in hospital than I would sitting in a pub – it makes you realise what people do for you. Life is too short – if I landed on my head that would have been it for me.” His sister Vivienne Bonnett, 38, from Bracknell, said: “I cannot stress enough what a fantastic job the air ambulance did and we also encourage others to support this fantastic service.”
When Tony is back to full fitness the family plans to do a fundraising event for the air ambulance. A Thames Valley & Chiltern Air Ambulance Trust spokeswoman said: “We are so pleased Tony is recovering from his accident and that we were able to help him and we wish him best wishes for the New Year. “But we could not be able to do this without the fantastic support from the communities we serve. As a charity we do not receive any funding from central Government, nor the National Lottery, and we rely solely on donations from the public.”
